Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916) was a Danish painter now described as both "low-key" and "reclusive", known for his paintings of empty rooms or rooms showing only someone facing away from the painter. In 2008 there was a major retrospective of his work in London, titled "The Poetry of Silence".

In many of Hammershoi's paintings the focus is on what's just out of sight, in the next room, or what might be seen from the window.
